Drinking green tea on a regular basis can help to improve oral health, according to a study conducted by a team of Japanese researchers.

The study involved 940 men; each participant was tested for symptoms of periodontal disease, including bleeding from the gums, the formation of pockets in the gum line and the loss of gum tissue. During the trial, the men were asked to drink green tea and the symptoms of periodontal disease were monitored and results of oral health tests recorded.

The results of the study, which have been recently published in the Journal of Periodontology, concluded that each cup of green tea eased the symptoms of periodontal disease; the tea was found to reduce the severity of all three of the major symptoms associated with periodontal disease.

Experts are eager to promote simple ways of promoting oral health and drinking tea could be one of the simplest and cheapest means of taking care of the gums. In addition to easing symptoms of periodontal disease, green tea has also been proven to have other health benefits as it is high in antioxidants.

The research team is currently unclear as to why green tea is so effective in easing periodontal disease, but it is thought that the antioxidants contained in green tea help to prevent the body’s inflammatory reaction to the harmful bacteria associated with periodontal disease. Further research will be carried out to determine the effects of green tea.
