Domestic Violence Sufferers Receive Teeth Makeovers

Sample News Big

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence there are 1.5 million people who have suffered abuse at the hands of a partner in America. Often these people are left with tooth injuries as well as many other mental and physical injuries. The American Academy Of Cosmetic Dentistry is using it’s charity Give Back a Smile Program to reconstruct victims mouths using dentists who volunteer their time to the cause.

One of the dental volunteers is Dr Thomas Skleba who owns Cary Dental Associates. As soon as he heard about the GBAS program he knew that he wanted to contribute his time to such a worthwhile cause. He said that cosmetic dentistry is normally something wanted rather than needed but in this case it is so much more than that.

Restoring domestic abuse victims teeth is a way to help them regain their self-confidence and a new start at life. He recently treated a woman who had a front tooth knocked out and another that was broken in half. She felt unable to smile and this therefore affected her mentally and socially as she withdrew from society. He felt that giving the victims back their smiles also gave them back their self-worth. A beaming happy smile can be worth so much, especially in situations such as job-interviews.

The Give Back a Smile program is working with dentists across the country to restore smiles for those that have been victims of domestic abuse.
