Doctors ahead by a Nose in Fight against Cancer

Sample News Big

Scientists are always looking for new ways to combat, prevent and neutralise cancer and now a new invention has been made to help with the fight against the disease and bring hope to doctors, dentists and patients alike.

Israeli scientists have come up with a revolutionary new invention that is set to sniff out cancer, by using an artificial nose.

Known as the Nanoscale Artificial Nose, or NA-NOSE for short, this inspired new invention is hopefully going to be the key to detecting oral cancers such as head and neck cancer. The device works by taking a sample of a patient’s breath, the artificial nose can then “sniff” out whether that person has traces of a number of cancers. As well as this, it is able to distinguish between head and neck cancer, lung cancer, and those without traces of any type of oral cancer.

While head and neck cancer is not as well known as many other forms of cancer (being the eighth most common curable cancer) it is still deadly and is often more so than other cancers because of the difficulty in detecting it, which means it is often discovered very late in its development.

Because of the unique development of the artificial nose and the fact it has no real similarity with any other device used for cancer detection, the chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter, has said that NA-NOSE will need further study to discover its effectiveness.

The doctor however, went on to state that a screening system to detect a cancer which “kills one person every five hours in the UK” is significant and as such will be greatly welcomed into many doctors and dentists surgeries, however, further research into the device is needed to fully discover just how effective and reliable it really is.
