A dental team from Derby hosted a Halloween-themed family fun day to educate children about oral health.

The team from Osmaston Dental Care donned fancy dress outfits and invited parents and kids to come along and take part in activities and games at the end of last month. The aim of the day was to engage kids in oral health issues, while also enabling them to have loads of fun at the surgery.

Throughout the day, children bounced on the bouncy castle, played games and had their faces painted, and all the kids left with a goodie bag. The dental team was also on hand to chat to parents and children about oral hygiene, diet and nutrition and to answer questions about issues related to oral health. Some of the children were brave enough to try plaque-disclosing tablets, which showed up areas of plaque on the teeth, and the dentists and nurses talked to them about how to brush and how brushing helps to stop plaque and cavities from developing.

Dentists were also keen to chat to parents about tooth-friendly foods and drinks and brushing habits at home in a bid to promote good oral health for all the family and reduce the risk of decay and gum disease.

Dr John Gregory, principal dentist, said that the day was a great success and everyone had thoroughly enjoyed welcoming children and their parents and carers to the practice. The event was not just an effective way of teaching children about oral hygiene and healthy eating habits, it also helped to ensure that children don’t feel scared about going to the surgery.
