Dentists reject mandatory retirement age
Dentists have been speaking out against rulings which suggest that they should retire once they reach a certain age.
The European Court of Justice recently ruled in favour of a German law which requires fire-fighters and dentists to retire at a certain age.
However, US dentists have rejected the idea, saying that retirement should be judged on an individual basis. A study revealed that only one dentist in 10 supported the idea of mandatory retirement.
A dentist from Mississippi said that dental education should be on-going through a professionals careers and added that both practitioners and patients know when oral health professional’s care skills are diminishing.
However, a Calfornian orthodontist said that there is a mandatory retirement age for many other professions in Europe and asked why should dentistry be any different.
A New York dentist said that he is 70-years-old and claimed that his skills are better than they have ever been.
