Dentist from Burton Albion Admits to Extracting a Tooth Without Permission

A top dentist from Burton Albion has admitted to the extraction of a patient’s tooth without asking consent.

Amandeep Taunk, known colloquially as Tony, did not get permission from the patient before taking out one of her teeth following her complaints of extreme dental pain.

A General Dental Council hearing heard how he failed to offer alternative treatment during her appointment on July 3rd 2013 at Dental Perfection in Branston.

Taunk is listed on the NHS Choices website as the official  Burton Albion dentist since 2011.

Tom Stevens from the General Dental Council said that Taunk also did not record his advice to Patient A or his justifications for the extraction.

According to Patient A, Taunk did not seem too confident in his personal ability to provide root canal treatment.

Patient A was told by Taunk that the treatment can be carried out by a specialist, and that this would more likely produce a more successful result. He said that seeing a specialist would involve higher costs and a long waiting list.

The patient was in excruciating pain and just wanted to feel better. She added that the only solution for pain relief seemed to be to have the tooth removed.

She said that had other options been available, she would have considered them.

Malcolm Fortune, defending, told the hearing the woman was given access two videos informing her about fillings and root canal treatment.

Taunk faces further charges regarding an earlier appointment with Patient A.

According to Mr Stevens, Taunk did not take any X-rays of the patient’s teeth between the date she joined the practice in August 2008 and March 2013.

The hearing continues.
