A new website has been launched by dentists in Hull to help local children learn how to look after their teeth and gums.

The 543 Dental Centre in Anlaby Road, West Hull, has launched the interactive site to help children learn about oral hygiene and issues related to oral health.

Chris Groombridge, managing director at the centre, said that Hull has very high levels of tooth decay and the website is a way of interacting with children and teaching them about the importance of good oral hygiene. He added that many children turn up at school without brushing their teeth and some do not have their own toothbrush so dentists in the area are working with the local health trust and schools to try and improve standards of oral health.

The website follows the Brush Bus programme, which was introduced into schools to teach children how to brush their teeth properly. The children keep their brushes in a bus-shaped container at school and brush their teeth under the supervision of a teacher. Since the programme was launched in 2006, thousands of children have benefited.

The website was developed as a result of the practice’s work with Henry Schein, a global distributor of medical and dental supplies and the site was built by Hull-based firm, Strawberry and is designed to be child-friendly and interesting. In addition to games and articles aimed at children, there are also sections for parents and teachers.
