Dental Visits Increase In Cumbria

New figures have revealed that more people are seeing a dentist in Cumbria.

The latest figures from the NHS Information Centre show an increase of 50,000 dental visits since last year, demonstrating that investment in dental services in the region has definitely paid off.

Over the course of the last 12 months, £2.25 million has been invested in dental services in Cumbria. The majority of the money has been used to improve access to NHS dental care by increasing the number of places available at an NHS dental practice. In West Cumbria and Kendal, there are 37,500 more dental places and further money has been ploughed into North Cumbria.

News of the improvements in access to dental care comes after the first anniversary of the Dental Education Centre, which is located in Carlisle. The facility was opened by Dr Barry Cockcroft, chief dental officer in England, last year and it is one of the four satellite training centres for students at the University of Central Lancashire.

Students at the university study a four year degree programme with their first year spent in Preston and the final three years spent at one of the satellite centres, which are located in Accrington, Blackpool, Morecambe and Carlisle. The course is one of a kind in the UK, allowing dentists to gain hands-on clinical experience from the early days of their studies.
