Dental practice’s open day attracts plenty of visitors

A dental practice in South Shields attracted a large number of visitors after dentists revealed they were hosting a fairy-themed open day for children in the area.

The South Tyneside Dental Group’s Westoe Road surgery hosted the event to teach children about the importance of brushing their teeth, visiting their dentist and eating healthy foods. Staff and children dressed up as fairies for the day and children were invited to taste foods and learn about oral hygiene. Staff wanted to show children the effects of eating sugary foods on their teeth and the practice nurses showed the children how to clean their teeth and look after their gums.

An increasing number of young children are suffering from tooth decay, which is causing them to be admitted to hospital to have teeth extracted. Figures show that children as young as two years old are being admitted to have teeth removed under general anaesthetic. Dentists say that poor diet and poor standards of oral hygiene are to blame for the worrying trend, with children surrounded by sugary, acidic foods and drinks.

The open day in South Shields was an enjoyable event for all involved and children were able to learn a lot about their teeth and gums. Staff were delighted with the turnout and are now planning to host a similar event for Halloween.
