Dental Nurse Shares Her Story about Soap and Sponge Cravings

A dental nurse from Mylor in Cornwall has shared her story, after being affected by an eating disorder that makes her crave sponges and soap.

Kerry Trebilcock said that she was determined to beat the disorder, which means that she cannot do the washing up or clean without experiencing hunger cravings. Kerry claims that she has eaten more than 4,000 sponges and 100 bars of organic soap since 2008, when the cravings first started.

Kerry’s eating habits changed dramatically after she developed hookworm during a trip to Morocco, after which she said that just smelling soap made her hungry. At the worst point Kerry was eating five sponges per day, which contributed to her experiencing stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

Kerry was eventually diagnosed with a condition called pica, which makes you crave non-food items and is now receiving counselling to help her control her eating habits.
