Two of the UK’s leading dental insurers are backing the National Smile Month campaign, which is due to launch on the 20th May. Bupa and Denplan have lent their support to the campaign, which aims to improve standards of oral health in the UK.

The annual campaign, which is run by dental charity, The British Dental Health Foundation, will run from the 20th May until the 20th June. The aim of the campaign is to get people thinking about oral health and raise awareness of the importance of oral hygiene and healthy lifestyle choices.

According to recent figures, a quarter of adults do not brush their teeth twice a day and only half of adults visit their dentist every 6 months for a check-up. Half of people have not seen a dentist within the last two years.

The National Smile Month campaign highlights the importance of three main rules: to brush the teeth twice a day for 2 minutes using fluoride toothpaste, to visit your dentist every 6 months for a dental check and to keep an eye on what you eat.

Tooth decay and gum disease are very common; however, they are preventable and simply spending a few minutes each day cleaning the teeth and avoiding eating and drinking a lot of sugary foods and drinks reduces the risk of oral diseases considerably.

During National Smile Month, dental practices across the UK will be taking part in activities and events to encourage people to take good care of their teeth and gums.
