Graduates from the University of Central Lancashire are helping to fill the gaps in NHS dental services.

The dental graduates are the first class to complete the brand new course at the multimillion pound dental centre at UCLan. During the training period, they watched, observed and carried out a range of dental treatments and they are now ready to go out into the world and offer their skills and expertise. There is a shortage of dentists in many areas of the North West and the new class of graduates will fulfil a very important role.

The graduates are the first to complete a new course which is centred on learning in the community; the course has come about as a result of close collaboration between the university and the local NHS trust. The aims of the course were to support students, offer them incredible training opportunities and facilities and encourage them to work in the area after they graduated. 21 of the 30 graduates have already secured training places in the North West.

Students were joined by Dr Barry Cockcroft, the chief dental officer, to celebrate their success. Head of the School of Dentistry, Professor Lawrence Mair, said that the new course had been a great success.
