Dental experts are alarmed after a survey revealed that millions of British people do not brush their teeth twice a day.

The survey, which was carried out by the British Dental Health Foundation as part of their annual National Smile Month campaign, revealed that 7 million Brits do not brush their teeth twice a day, while one in 5 forget to floss.

The survey also displayed some other shocking hygiene habits, with a quarter of people admitting that they do not cover their mouth when they cough.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that the results of the survey were shocking and added that he was surprised by the findings, as they show that people cannot undergo even the most fundamental hygienic tasks.

Dr Carter said that it is important that people are aware of the importance of oral hygiene, as oral health has a significant bearing on general health. There is a growing body of evidence to support that gum disease increases the risk of life-threatening illnesses, such as heart disease and strokes.

Dr Carter said that those who skip brushing their teeth expose their teeth to danger and increase the risk of decay and gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss. Dr Carter advised people to brush their teeth before they go to bed to remove plaque and food debris and provide the teeth with a protective fluoride coating through the night.
