Dental Expert Offers Tips for Christmas

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, has offered advice for patients to ensure that toothache and oral health problems do not ruin the festive period.

Dr Carter said that many dentists take time off immediately before Christmas and this can make it difficult for patients to get an appointment. As a result it is advisable for patients who have not been to a dentist for a long period of time to see their dentist before Christmas.

Christmas is traditionally associated with indulging in lots of rich foods and sweet treats and this can be a nightmare for the teeth and gums. To combat this, Dr Carter has advised sticking to a good oral hygiene routine and trying to avoid grazing between meals, as this means the protective enamel surfaces of the teeth are under constant attack. If you do eat food that is sugary or acidic, it is advisable to wait at least one hour before brushing your teeth, as this can cause further damage to the enamel.

A survey carried out by Wrigley’s showed that more than 70 percent of respondents said that bad breath was one of the biggest turn-offs when thinking about kissing someone under the mistletoe.

Dr Carter advised regular check-ups and visits to the dental hygienist to keep teeth healthy and strong and prevent problems such as staining and bad breath.
