Dental crisis in Jedburgh
The Scottish town of Jedburgh is facing a dental crisis as another practice is set to close.
Access to NHS dental care in the town was already poor but things are set to get even worse as one of the town’s two practices is likely to close because the dentist is retiring soon.
Dr Ken Simpson of Simpsons Dental Practice is planning to retire in January and no plans have been formed about replacing his services.
GM Hamilton will remain as the town’s sole dentist, and will have to try to serve around 4,000 patients.
Dr Simpson said that he would be retiring on 29 January 2010 due to ill health and that he had been unable to find anyone to buy or take over his practice.
He added he would have to sell the building for a potential conversion to flats.
John Lamont, MSP Roxburgh and Berwickshire, is urging NHS Borders to make changes to stop hundreds of patients being left without access to a dentist.
