The cosmetic dentistry industry is experiencing strong and powerful growth, it has been claimed.

According to Canadian newspaper the Calgary Herald, the trend is not only attributable to media and celebrities, but also to an ageing baby-boomer crowd who are taking more care in their appearance.

Dr Steven J Hill, president of the Canadian Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, explained that there has been a 300 per cent rise in teeth whitening treatments since 1996, making it one of the most popular patient demands.

"There is so much change in the industry and that’s perhaps the most exciting and perplexing part of it," he said. "A lot of fine-tuning has gone on with the products, so that they are faster, better and easier to manage and handle."

Veneers are the most "useful tool in our arsenal", he added, claiming they can make the biggest change to an individual’s smile.

However, traditional orthodontics such as braces can still make a definite improvement in a poorly aligned smile, he said.
