Colchester Dental Practice Saved By Fire Fighters

Fire fighters in Colchester battled 30 foot flames to save a dental practice yesterday, it has been reported.

Fire crews were called to The Dental Practice on Halstead Road at around 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The practice is owned by Francois Roussow.

The fire swept through the outbuilding adjacent to the dental surgery, as flames were fuelled by old paper patient records and dental equipment. At one point, the flames were 30 foot high as the fire ripped through wooden floorboards and firewood.

Mr Roussow said that a patient had raised the alarm after seeing smoke. He thought about getting a hose pipe out but decided against after worrying that it may make the situation worse. He then called fire fighters and the crews arrived at the scene within 4 minutes.

It was impossible to save the outbuilding, but fire fighters were able to contain the flames after around 30 minutes and save the surgery. Mr Roussow said that it was a great shame to lose the outbuilding, which he described as “lovely”, but stressed that it was more important that nobody got hurt and said that it is time to move on now and look to the future.

Syd Barrett, station officer, said that by the time the crews arrived the fire was burning bright and the entire building was alight. However, the crews worked very hard to smother the flames and after 30 minutes the fire was under control.

Smoke from the fire was seen across the town.
