Chernobyl children pay the dentist a visit in Malvern

A group of children from Chernobyl has paid the dentist a visit as part of a charity scheme to provide children from the area with the chance to travel to the UK. The Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Charity provides children growing up in the region to visit the UK, taking advantage of health services, as well as giving the children the opportunity to take part in fun activities, explore the country and make new friends.

The charity has been supported by Beacon Dental Care for the last 12 years, and recently, the children paid the clinic their annual visit. A group of 12 children visited the practice to see dentists, Karen Sutton and David Watson, and the rest of the team. Karen said that everyone is happy to support the charity, and the staff always looks forward to the children’s visit. These are children that don’t have much, and they don’t have access to basic dental care, so providing them with dental checks and treatments is really important. Standards of oral health tend to be much lower than you would see in children living in the UK, and it’s a pleasure to be able to help out. This year, Karen fixed the front tooth of a little boy who had tripped and broken the tooth and never had it repaired. The smile on his face said it all.

David Watson said that the effects of Chernobyl are still visible, and even though the children were born long after the disaster, their health is an issue. He added the Beacon is proud to support the charity and the team will always do whatever possible to make the children feel welcome and to help them have fun while they’re at the dentist.
