Celebrity cosmetic dentists 'good for the profession'
According to a survey by The Wealthy Dentist, the 38 per cent who do not agree claimed that the televised dentists are favouring appearance over medical concerns and reflecting badly on the profession.
One dental office worker in Florida commented: "I believe that most people want to look like celebrities.
"Since cosmetic dentistry has been exposed by celebrities, more people are inquiring about the procedures available to improve their smile."
However a number of dentists voiced concern that maintaining healthy teeth is more important than the aesthetics of a smile.
One prosthodentist explained that cosmetic dental work only offers instant gratification and is not in the long-term interests of the patient.
The Oral Health Journal reports that in 2006, 67 per cent of cosmetic dentistry patients were female.
