Two employees from a dental practice in Bromsgrove have been conned out of more than £2,000 after falling foul to a telephone scam.

Two employees had their bank cards stolen from the College Road Dental Surgery on Friday morning and were then scammed out of more than £2,000. The theft occurred between 8am and midday on the 8th November.

One of the employees was contacted by a man pretending to be a police officer who said that he had found the stolen wallet, while the other was contacted by a person pretending to be a member of the bank fraud team who told her that a girl had been trying to use the stolen bank card.

The employees were both tricked into revealing their PIN codes and they both lost money; £250 was taken from the female employee’s account and her card was used to purchase goods worth £2,000 and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the male employee’s account.

PC Richard Spillane, from West Mercia Police, said that scammers are very convincing but the public should be aware that banks and police officers would never ask anyone to reveal their personal PIN code over the telephone; he urged the public to take great care when talking to people over the telephone and reminded them never to disclose personal information, especially bank details, in response to phone calls, letters or emails. PC Spillane said that people should contact the police if they are unsure whether something is authentic or a scam.

West Mercia Police force has encouraged anyone who is contacted by people pretending to be police officers or bank workers to ring the non-emergency number, 101 and to avoid ringing the caller back on any direct number they provide.
