A year 4 student from Peter Gladwin primary school in Brighton is all smiles after she was crowned the winner of a competition to design healthy, tooth-friendly snacks.

Ellie Rickard, who is 9 years old, created a healthy, nutritious snack menu, which included celery and carrot sticks and dips, breadsticks, natural yoghurt and fresh fruit, as part of the competition, which was designed to get youngsters thinking about healthy eating and looking after their teeth and gums.

Peter Gladwin primary has been working with Brighton and Hove City Council as part of an initiative to get kids involved in making healthy lifestyle choices. One of the main aims of the programme is to encourage children to swap sugar-laden after school treats, such as sweets, chocolate bars and fizzy pop, for healthier alternatives.

The goal for the scheme is to promote healthy living in a bid to cut childhood illnesses, including tooth decay and obesity.

After learning of her success, Ellie was photographed with her friends and appeared in the local paper.
