Breakfast Cereals Packed with Sugar

Sample News Big

Take a trip down any supermarket cereal aisle and you’re likely to be bombarded with labels suggesting that cereals are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. However, if you take the time to look closely, you will notice that many of the most popular cereals are actually packed with sugar.

A consumer report carried out by Which? has revealed that many of the cereals aimed at children are very high in sugar, with the worst offenders being Kellogg’s Frosties, Tesco’s Choco Snaps and Sugar Puffs. Frosties contain 37 percent sugar. According to the Food Standards Agency, a high sugar content would be 15 percent, meaning that many cereals are way above the recommended amount.

An article recently published in Nature journal claimed that excessive consumption of sugar is contributing to 35 million deaths per year worldwide.

Taking in too much sugar increases the risk of serious illnesses, including diabetes, as well as contributing to oral health diseases and problems with concentration and energy levels, caused by fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Eating sugary foods on a regular basis also increases the risk of weight gain, with obesity becoming an increasingly prevalent problem in the UK. Eating sugary foods causes people to crave treats like chocolate, sweets and cakes and this often contributes to over-eating and subsequent weight gain.

Obesity and tooth decay are two of the most common preventable childhood illnesses and sugar consumption is a major contributing factor to both health issues.
