Members of staff from a children’s centre in Girlington, near Bradford, have launched a campaign to promote good oral health, after they found that a quarter of the children in their care did not have a dentist.

Staff from the St Edmund’s  Nursery School and Children’s Centre conducted a survey and were shocked to find that a quarter of the children had never been to see a dentist; the questionnaire also showed that some children did not even have a toothbrush.

Claire Birch, family and community services leader at the centre, said the results of the survey were shocking. She claimed that Bradford had one of the worst records for oral hygiene and decided to launch a week long campaign to try and educate children and parents about oral health and encourage them to take better care of their teeth and gums.

Cherene Aggarwal and Ben Marlow, from A&S Dental Surgery on Duckworth Lane, visited the centre to talk to staff, parents and children and donate toothbrushes and toothpaste. Every child should receive a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste as part of the campaign.
