Botox ‘should only be prescribed by professionals’

People considering Botox injections to reduce the signs of ageing would do well to be remember that it should only be prescribed by medical officials, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The newspaper explains that by law, only doctors, dentists and nurses can perform the treatment and that the same regulations apply to Botox’s competitor Vistabel.

Both brands are the only ones to be licensed by cosmetic use and according to Jenny Driscoll, health campaigner at consumer magazine Which?, should only be administered in establishments equipped to deal with the rare reactions of anaphylactic shock.

Ms Driscoll explained such an intense reaction is infrequent, but very dangerous should it occur.

The Botox industry is currently self-governed, with an intention to be officially reviewed in 2010.

Sally Taber of the Independent Healthcare Advisory Services recently told BBC One’s Breakfast programme that her organisation is to produce a set of industry guidelines.ADNFCR-1374-ID-18446915-ADNFCR
