Boost for Harrogate dental patients, as NHS surgery relaunches

Dental patients in Harrogate have been given a massive boost after an NHS practice relaunched, providing hundreds more NHS dental places. Harrogate Dental Care has taken over the former mydentist clinic at Hookstone Park.

There were fears for dental provision in the area after mydentist announced that it would cease to provide NHS care, and news of the launch of the rebranded surgery has been welcomed by dental patients, as well as local MPs and councillors.

Constance Pillar, commissioning lead for dental services in the North, explained that it had been difficult to find a new provider due to the fact that mydentist chose to stop fulfilling the terms of the NHS contract.

The new practice has six dentists, and councillors are hoping that it will have a positive impact on the community. Geoff Webber, local councillor, has campaigned for better access to NHS dental care in the area for almost two years. Mr Webber was delighted to hear about the new practice opening, but suggested that issues may remain given the level of demand for treatment.

One of the dentists involved with taking over the contract, Dr Muhammad Farooq, said that the operation is “mammoth”, and praised NHS chiefs for responding to issues with access caused by the premature cessation of contracts swiftly. At the moment, there are four dentists working at Harrogate Dental Care, but this will increase to 6 dentists in July.
