A dentist from Bolton is preparing for a gruelling Ironman challenge in a bid to raise money for a local hospice.

Dr Zuber Baghasi, from the Synergy Dental Group, will take on a trio of lung-busting events this July to raise money for the Bolton Hospice. The Ironman challenge comprises of a 2.4-mile swim, a run covering 26.2 miles and 112 miles of cycling. Dr Bagasi is hoping to raise a lot of money for the hospice, but he also said that he wants to be a positive role model for the Asian community in his local area.

The 36-year old dentist, who lives in Lostock, said that he has watched competitors in previous years, as the course runs past his house, and he has always been interested in taking part. Over the years, he noticed that there were very few Asian competitors, and he decided to put his name in the hat, not just to raise funds for charity, but also to encourage others to take notice of the event and to appreciate the value of sport.

Dr Bagasi started training for the event in September and quickly realised that his training would need to be more intensive than the 3 or 4 sessions a week he envisaged. After meeting with trainer, Ray McGloin at Tri-Rivington, it became clear to Dr Bagasi that he would need to commit a significant amount of time to improving his endurance and mastering the three disciplines.

The ambitious dentist admitted that training has been very hard work, but he said that he has already learned so much about himself as a result of undertaking the programme and he is now looking forward to the event in July.
