Birmingham Dental Hospital could move to Pebble Mill

Plans to move Birmingham Dental Hospital to Pebble Mill have been revealed.

The current site dates back to the 1960’s and the hospital is showing signs of ageing and tiredness, with the layout and structure of the building also being criticised, as the 10 storey building is littered with concrete pillars, which hinder the way dentists work. There are also problems related to Legionnaire’s disease due to the age of the pipes and there are concerns about asbestos.

Plans have now been unveiled to move the hospital to Pebble Mill, the former home of the BBC. The move would cost around £31 million and the five storey building would house both the hospital and the dental school.

The move has been supported by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Calthorpe Estates, the University of Birmingham and the Solihull LIFT Development Group.

A spokeswoman for the project said that the design for the building had not yet been completed but ideas and plans would be gathered from patient groups, dental staff, the city planning team and members of the community. Calthorpe Estates will oversee the planning process as part of their plans to redevelop the Pebble Mill site.

The dental hospital treats around 130,000 patients every year and employs more than 400 members of staff. A preview of the plans for the new dental hospital will be available for the public to see at the Midlands Arts Centre in Cannon Hill Park between 2pm and 8pm on June 8th.
