Belper Residents Smiling as a Result of Dental Voucher Scheme

Belper residents are showing off healthier smiles as a result of a dental voucher scheme, which was funded by the Department of Health.

The voucher campaign, which was supported by the local press, aimed to target people who had not visited a dentist for the last two years and provided a free check-up with an NHS dentist. The scheme was made possible by additional funding worth £180,000 given out to NHS Derbyshire Primary Care Trust by the government earlier this year.

Residents who had not seen a dentist for 2 years were invited to print vouchers for a free check-up from the paper and present them to a participating dentist. The voucher was worth £17, the cost of a routine examination.

In total, 32 dental practices across the county participated in the voucher scheme and health chiefs said that the scheme had helped thousands of people reconnect with NHS dental services.

Dentist Mak Sidhu, from Park Dental, said that he had seen patients who had not been to the dentist for 10 or even 20 years, many of whom had severe gum disease and extensive decay.

Keith Mann, head of primary care for NHS Derbyshire, said that scheme had been a great success and hoped that the people who received the vouchers would now visit their dentist on a regular basis.
