Bedford dental practice to offer free oral cancer screening in April

Dental patients in Bedford are invited to attend free oral cancer screening at Chrysalis Dental Practice on the afternoon of Friday 29th April.

The clinic will be offering free screening appointments between 3pm and 6pm as part of a drive to raise awareness of mouth cancer, a type of cancer that has become much more common in the last 30 years. In the last decade alone, the number of cases diagnosed in the UK has increase by around a third.

Dentist, Dr Minesh Patel, has launched the initiative to try and make local people more aware of oral cancer, and encourage them to look out for possible warning signs. Although more than 6,000 people suffer from oral cancer every year, awareness is still low, and many people are unaware of the symptoms. This contributes to late diagnosis. When oral cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, the chances of survival can be up to 90 percent higher.

Dr Nigel Carter MBE, chief executive of the Oral Health Foundation, thanked the practice for getting involved in the charity’s Mouth Cancer Action campaign, and urged the people of Bedford to support the event and take advantage of free screening sessions.
