BBC Documentary to Air Story of 48 Year Old Who Superglued Her Own Teeth

A new BBC documentary set to air later this week will share stories in order to paint a picture of dental health in the UK. One of the stories featured is that of 48-year old Angie Barlow, a mother who was so scared to go to the dentist that she spent years super-gluing her own teeth.

Angie, who is from Altrincham, Cheshire, said she avoided going to the dentist for 10 years because she was so afraid. In that time, she resorted to using super glue to restore her teeth, eventually creating her own version of a glue denture. Angie, a professional dog walker, was afraid to go to the dentist for help after losing her mother to oral cancer at the age of just 34. Her mother was diagnosed after having a tooth removed and Angie had an unshakeable fear that the same fate awaited her.

Dr Serpil Djemal, a consultant at King’s College London, described Angie’s as one of the worst cases he has ever seen and certainly the worst instance of desperation he has even known. The superglue had formed a kind of denture, but Angie’s teeth were in extremely poor condition and she had lost almost 90 percent of the supportive bone structure beneath.

Angie explained that when her teeth started to come loose, she glued them into place, buying her a little more time. She felt embarrassed when she smiled and did her best to hide her smile away, often talking to people with her hand covering her mouth.

In ‘The Truth About Your Teeth’, which is set to air on BBC1 on the 4th June, Angie decides to have extensive dental treatment, which involves the extraction of 11 of her top teeth. Dentists, including Dr Djemal and private dentist Dr Kailesh Solanki, removed her teeth and placed titanium implants, before attaching 12 brand new teeth. After paying thousands of pounds out of her life savings, Angie shows off the results of her treatment and said that she now feels “amazing” and is constantly showing off her teeth rather than hiding away and feeling embarrassed around other people.
