Baby hippo enjoys a trip to the dentist
An adorable baby hippo has paid the dentist a visit for the first time. Keepers at Cincinatti Zoo & Botanical Gardens have been keeping a close eye on baby Fiona after she arrived prematurely in January, and just this week, she took her first trip to the dentist.
Fiona is now three months old and she is under constant surveillance, as keepers prepare to let her go outside with her parents, Henry and BiBi. Fiona is not yet old or strong enough to experience the big bad world, but she is getting there, and keepers have been really impressed and pleased with her progress. The beautiful baby hippo now weighs over 200 pounds and she is gaining weight and growing every day.
Hippos rely heavily on their teeth to break down and chew food, so it’s essential for keepers to keep a close eye on Fiona’s pearly whites. Her first dental check-up went well, and the team will be monitoring her as she gets older and her teeth develop.
Fiona has quickly become a very precious addition to the zoo, and visitors always want to know all about her.
