Avoid Wine To Keep Teeth Sparkling After Whitening

Researchers in Brazil have found that drinking wine does more harm than coffee following whitening treatment.

According to a study, which has been published in the February issue of Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, red wine causes worse staining than coffee after teeth whitening.

A team of researchers from a dental practice in the centre of Sao Paolo analysed staining caused by red wine and coffee during and after bleaching treatment. The team divided blocks from human molars into eleven groups using staining agents coffee and red wine and a control; they used a spectrophotometer to measure the change of colour on the molars.

Researchers found that there was little change in the concentration of carbamide peroxide during whitening treatment, but after treatment there were significant differences in the concentrations between the groups that were treated with coffee and red wine.

The authors of the study explained that during bleaching, remineralisation of the enamel brought about by artificial saliva and bleaching agent were effective in preventing staining of the tooth enamel; however, after treatment was complete both red wine and coffee were found to stain the tooth enamel, with wine producing the most dramatic change in colour.
