Researchers from the University of Graz in Austria are looking for volunteers for a study, which will investigate the cause of dental phobia.

Researchers estimate that between 2 and 4 per cent of the population of Styria suffer from a phobia of going to the dentist that is so strong that they refuse to even have a check-up.

Sonja Ubel, from the university’s Institute of Psychology, is calling for volunteers to come forward and help with the study, which is aiming to reduce fear associated with going to the dentist and having dental treatment.

The university is looking for males and females aged between 18 and 45 who have a phobia of going to the dentist. Researchers want to interview people who experience severe anxiety at the mere thought of going to the dentist.

The study will involve participants answering a series of simple questions before undergoing an interview with a psychologist to determine the causes of dental phobia. Researchers will be carrying out diagnostic tests, but the team has confirmed that they will not be asking anyone to go to the dentist.

It is hoped that the findings of the study will help to determine the efficacy of new treatments available for patients with dental anxiety.
