Augusta dentist named as new ADA spokesperson
An August dentists has been named as the American Dental Association’s new spokesperson on pediatric dentistry.
Dr Jonathan Shenkin was picked for the job because of his expertise in the field and high public profile.
The 38-year-old dentist said that he felt honored and excited by his employment and said his main responsibility would now be to field media inquiries to the ADA about pediatric dentistry.
A long-term voice about children’s health, Dr Shenkin had to audition for the role in a process which took more than a year. As part of the interview he had to demonstrate his skill at public speaking and broad expert knowledge of the subject.
He played key roles in schemes like banning smoking in cars in Bangor if children were present and banning the purchasing of sodas with food stamps.
Dr Shenkin, who is president of the board of trustees at Maine Dental Association and professor at Boston University, said that he believed that speaking out on issues was part of his responsibility to improve oral health.
He graduated at Columbia University and achieved his master’s degree at Johns Hopkins University.
