Appeal to help nurse pay for dental treatment after bottle attack

The local press in South Yorkshire are appealing for help to provide treatment for a nurse who was attacked on a night out in Conisborough.

Astra Taylor, a 20 year old nurse, was hit in the face with a bottle whilst enjoying a night out at the Fox Inn; when she put her hand up to protect her mouth, she found out that she had lost six teeth. Astra was attacked by a gang of local thugs and another man was hurt in the attack. She was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary and then referred to a specialist maxillofacial surgeon in Rotherham.

Miss Taylor was left without eight teeth and now faces a £14,000 dental bill to replace the missing teeth; the NHS has refused to pay for treatment because only certain dental treatments are covered by the health service; dental implants are only available in exceptional circumstances. As a result of this, local people, along with Astra’s family and friends, are trying to raise enough money to pay for the treatment.

Astra said she was devastated about the attack but thankful that her injuries had not been worse. She said a conversation with her sister may have saved her life, as she was planning on wearing heels to go to the pub – her sister advised her to wear flat boots instead and this piece of sisterly advice could have saved Astra, as the bottle may have struck her in the neck if she had been wearing high heels.

The family are also planning to set up the Astra Taylor Trust to help other victims of violence in the area. Family friend and local boxing star, Stefy Bull, has pledged to lend his support and is hoping to host a charity boxing event where he will take on the European champion, Jamie McDonell.

South Yorkshire police said that investigations were ongoing but no arrests had been made.
