A dental duo from Amesbury has returned from a charity mission in Morocco.

Dentist Mark Inman was joined by his colleague, dental nurse Rachel Forrester, on the trip, which was organised by Dentaid. The duo, who can usually be found at Ivydene Dental Practice, was part of a team of eleven volunteer dental professionals.

During their time in the remote villages of Morocco, Mark, Rachel and the rest of the Dentaid team treated hundreds of people, providing them with pain relief and carrying out routine procedures, such as extractions. For many of the patients, this was their first trip to the dentist and they were very grateful to the team for ridding them of pain they had suffered for months or even years. The team also handed out around 3,000 toothbrushes. At home in the UK, we don’t think twice about buying a brush and using it to clean our teeth twice a day. But in Morocco, a simple brush is considered a luxury and most people don’t own one.

Mark said that many of the patients he saw had extensive dental health problems. Most people don’t have any form of oral hygiene regime in place, and their diet tends to be very sweet.

The team was given a very warm welcome everywhere they travelled and both Mark and Rachel said that the experience was incredibly satisfying, although it was also challenging.

Dentaid is a charity, which provides dental care in some of the world’s most remote areas.
