American Dentist on a Mission in Haiti

An American dentist has swapped Michigan for Mare Cochon, a remote village in Haiti, to provide much-needed dental care.

Dr Steve Edmondson, from Saranac, Michigan, the founder of Starfysh, a non-profit organisation, has travelled to the Haitian island of La Gonave with a group of missionaries to provide basic dental care for people living in poor conditions.

Dr Edmondson said that the work the team was carrying out on the island was very important, as many of the inhabitants had never seen a dentist before and were suffering from extensive oral health problems. Dr Edmondson established Starfysh around two years ago with the main aim of bringing valuable dental services to Haiti, an island which has struggled with natural disasters and has an extremely high rate of poverty.

Dr Edmondson is also helping to bring other basic services to La Goneve, including healthcare, food, clean water and access to oral health education. As well as a dental team, Starfysh also brought a medical team who will be providing a range of basic medical services for local residents.

The dental team is working tirelessly to try and see as many people as possible during their time on the island. They work long days, lining adults and children up and performing countless examinations and providing additional treatments including extractions and fillings.
