All ages are turning to orthodontics, says AAO
According to the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO), a fifth of people who are currently receiving orthodontic treatment are over the age of 18.
"As teeth and jaws come into alignment, self-esteem increases too," remarked Dr James E Gjerset, former president of the AAO.
"Given today's technological advances and the affordability of treatment, patients of all ages are improving their smiles," he added.
However, early treatment is recommended, advised the AAO, as this can prevent problems later on in life.
The organisation also claims that 21st century orthodontics can provide people with a "glimpse into the future", as computer software can generate visual faces to help dentists effectively plan the end result of treatment.
An online survey of women by AOL found that bad teeth are one of the top ten turn offs in a man.
