After school dental care trial underway in Bendigo

Bendigo Health Board has launched a six week trial programme to provide extended hours for children’s dental care.

The programme will be used to determine the degree of demand for extended hours and will focus on secondary school students. From Wednesday onwards the school dental clinic will open from 5pm until 8pm.

Robyn Lindsay, from Bendigo Health, said she was confident that the pilot scheme would be a success. There is an option to extend the programme if there is sufficient demand for after school appointments.

Ms Lindsay said the scheme had been launched as a result of conversations between parents, teachers and representatives from the health board; many parents asked for extended hours because they felt there was not enough time after school, as many children participate in after school activities and others have a lot of homework to do leading up to exams.

If the results of the pilot programme are positive, it is likely that the after school clinic will become a permanent fixture. Ms Lindsay said the health board was working closely with LaTrobe University to determine the best way to provide care for schoolchildren in the future.
