Adjustment to fluoride in water not a rebuke

While the recent lowering of fluoride in water supplies may have been seen as an admittance of the dangers of such an act, it would seem this is in fact not the case.

Instead, it is now claimed that the lowering of fluoride in water is merely a response to the fact that many manufacturers now add the chemical to products such as toothpastes, mouthwashes and a host of bottled water.

Or at least that is the claim as to why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently lowered the recommended proportion of fluoride in public water supplies.

A.J. Homicz, DDS, Dental Director at Families First Health and Support Center in Portsmouth, says: ‘Fluoridation remains the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay.’

He added: ‘I am pleased that Health and Human Services has affirmed the benefits of fluoridation. The message to the public is that fluoridation is safe, effective and should continue.’

Thus the New Hampshire Oral Health Coalition membership continues to support the addition of fluoride to community water, as per the recommended levels given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But for many the issue of community fluoridated water supplies remains a contentious issue.
