Abu Dhabi Dentist Emphasise the Need for Better Oral Healthcare for Children

Dentists in Abu Dhabi have emphasised the need for better oral healthcare for children, after many witnessed an increase in the number of children with oral health diseases. According to dental experts, children make up almost 50% of the patients at dental clinics in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking at the Internal Dental Conference, Dr Vera Tang, assistant director of pre-doctoral periodontics at New York University College of Dentistry, said that the decline in standards of oral health was very worrying because research studies are finding an increasingly strong link between poor oral health and poor general health, with oral health diseases linked to an increased risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes.

Dr Tang said that it was important that people realised the importance of good oral health and that solutions, including preventative treatments, oral health education and oral hygiene were used, rather than simply assuming that all problems can be solved by extracting problem teeth.

Dr Yahya Al Rifaai, head of the Al Noor Hospital dental department, said that patients as young as three years old were coming in for urgent treatment. Many children have poor oral hygiene habits and their diet is increasing the risk of oral health problems, which are affecting children earlier than ever before.

Dentists at the conference were also eager to raise the profile of oral health for diabetic patients, as many diabetics are unaware that their condition makes them more susceptible to oral health problems.
