A survey has revealed that 65 percent of school-aged children have tooth decay in Jordan.

The study, which was conducted by the Jordan Dental Association, involved 1,004 children from schools around Jordan. The survey also found that only 18 percent of children brushed their teeth properly and only 2 percent used dental floss.

Other similar studies found that a quarter of parents encourage their children to brush their teeth while they supervise them, while 60 percent encourage them to brush their teeth but don’t supervise them and 15 percent don’t advise their children to take care of their teeth.

The study also revealed that 70 percent of dentists talk to their patients about procedures, with 30 percent just going straight into the treatment.

Yesterday, the Jordan Dental Association launched a six year plan to improve standards of oral health amongst schoolchildren. The programme will promote preventative dental treatments and provide better education for children. The project is being funded by the World Dental Federation. President of the Jordan Dental Association, Barakat Jaabari called for government ministers to promote oral health and encourage young people to look after their teeth and gums.
