A 20 year old woman who lost six of her front teeth in a cycling accident is smiling again thanks to the generosity of a local dentist.

When Alex Kerr biked home last year she was hit by a car, she had extensive injuries; a broken pelvis, dislocated knee joints and a fractured jaw and was in a coma for a week. When Ms Kerr came out of her coma she also realised that she had lost a number of teeth.

Although Alex made a full recovery, her lost teeth really affected her confidence and she was reluctant to leave her home in Milton Keynes because she didn’t want people to see her gappy smile. The NHS refused to provide implant treatment and Alex was left wondering what she would do to restore her smile and boost her confidence, with the cost of private treatment stretching into the thousands.

After seeing Alex’s story in the newspapers, a local dentist offered to provide Alex’s treatment, which was worth £12,000, free of charge. Dr Wynand de Jeger, from Brooklands Dental Practice in Broughton, contacted Alex and offered to help. The company, which provided the materials, waived their fee and Dr de Jeger wiped out his normal fees. Alex has now had the first stage of her treatment and is waiting for her permanent implants to be fitted.

Alex said that she was overwhelmed by the response to her story and touched that Dr de Jeger came forward and offered to help her. She thanked everyone at the dental practice and said that she already feels so much more confident; she is now excited about the final stage of her treatment.
