Default Gap In Between Front Teeth

Hello, i have a considerable natural gap in between my two front teeth, approximatly half the size of one tooth. Its a serious problem for me because my confidence is completly sapped. I am only 18 years old and was wondering what type of solution would be available. My bottom row of teeth are absolutly fine. Any solutions would be much appreciated.

    Yours sincerly

    Hi Leon,

I understand why this type of cosmetic problem would be impacting your confidence. There is a wide array of treatment options available but you would really benefit from a full consultation. Treatment options range from simple bonding, bracework to veneers. A single gap in the middle, especially a large gap, can be a very tricky problem to solve so its essential its done correctly.

Sometimes it can be a very straight forward procedure, and this is why a full consultation would be beneficial

Please feel free to contact me if you need any further help

    Default solutions for your gap

hi Leon, this is quite a common problem believe it or not. i have many patients come to see me with what the profession call a diastema(gap between the two front teeth), as you have commented it is a large gap, so options are limited. i will go through each option in point form:

1: braces, this is a great way to close the gap the advantages of this treatment is there is generally no drilling involved and is relatively pain free. there are also invisible braces available so no need for the conventional train tracks type of braces. the main disadvantage of this treatment is the length of treatment time can be upto 2 years dependant up on the severity of gap.

2:veneers to close the gap, this is very tricky as if you just have the two front teeth veneered this can make the two teeth look very un naturally big. therefore we generally spread the space in the gap over more teeth so all the teeth are slightly bigger closing the gap and so making everything look more evenly proportioned. the main advantage of this treatment is the speed at which it can be done. in a two week period. the disadvantage is that the teeth in generally have to be prepared so drilling is necessary. this can however also improve the colour of the teeth and also improve shape and contour.

hope this is helpful. the best thing would be to seek out a cosmetic dentist you feel you can trust and go for a consultation.

if you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me. and happy new year.

Thanks a lot for the help, however with my age would braces still be an option ? I thought 18 would be quite old to have them. I have allso heard about veneers as this is a family trait my father had them done recently and they look great, only the two front teeth though. Judging by age which particular option would you recomend on the limited information i have given :P

Leon, depending on the size of the gap two veneers may be an option but only if the gap is very small. I spend a lot of time correcting cosmetic dentistry where people have opted for the cheapest option to save money. Its much better just to get it right. For large spaces it may be necessary to do more veneers but that is where a consultation is needed.

You are not too old for bracework, my friend. My oldest client in braces is 67!

This is fascinating information to me. I have a few other questions which have arisen throughout my research .

    1. Will the traditional type braces correct most of this problem over x amount of years or would they mearly straighten them more ?

    2. Are veneers made of a similar component to our natural teeth, and if not what is there expected life span.

    3. The approximate costs of either of the above treatments.

    and finally :P

    4. How would i get into consultation with my closest cosmetic dentistry ? would it be through my actual dentist ?

I really cannot stress enough how much i appreciate the feedback to everyone who has posted.

    Thumbs up the final questions

hi Leon, i am glad you are getting the answers you need, i will try to answer your final questions :

1: Whether you opt for traditional style braces or the invisible braces both types of treatment will correct your condition and also straighten the teeth. in addition if you opted for the invisible braces you can simultaneously whiten your teeth.

2:Veneers are generally made from a feldspatic porcelain, which in context to similarity to natural teeth is a very similar material. the average veneers lifespan being 10 to 15 years.

3: braces treatments can be anything from £3000 to £5000 dependant on the type of braces you chose and the dentist which carries out the treatment.
Veneers are also very variant on price. they generally start at £500 per tooth and can range upto £1000 per tooth. again this is dependant on the type of veneer being done and the clinic at which it is done. i personally specialise in CEREC veneers which enables me to constuct the veneer on the same day as preparing the tooth and so being able to fit the veneer on the same day so, not needing temporaries. But remember not good cosmetic clinics will offer payment plans to spread the costs.

4:To get a consultation with your closest cosmetic dentist, if you reply back and give me an idea of where you live i could recommend one for you. you do not have to be referred by your own generally dentist.

hope all this is helpful. If you require any further asistance dont hesitate to reply back.

Hi Leon, it could very well be that you need a combination of treatment including braces and veneers. Its really difficult to say more without a full consultation. With regards to how strong veneers are, the answer is extremely. When done correctly they actually reinforce the strength of your natural teeth.

As Dr Solanki mentioned, 10-15 years is the average cosmetic lifespan of veneers although I have seen veneers in place which look superb after 20+ years of function.

It is very important that you find a reputable dentist to do them well. The last thing you want is to have a mediocre result. A good friend of mine is a ceramic specialist and does most of my smile makeover cases and he is the only person I would have construct my own veneers

Again, Dr Solanki is correct in his price range. And most high end practices offer interest free options to help make the investment more comfortable

    Hope this helps
