My gum has badly receeded up to the bone I need a gum graft

Hi -

am new to this and am trying to find advice on gum probs - but can't seem to find appropriate forum to join - so I'll write here instead! Any advice welcome please

My gum has badly receeded up to the bone - I think due to a piercing (which I no longer have) - the tooth is discoloured and the bone is starting to show - I have visited various NHS and private dentists but can't seem to get a concensus of opinnion re treatment. Gum grafts, filling the area, and nothing you can do have been some of the answers - after 5 years of watching the decline of gum and worsening tooth discolouration I need some reliable advice please - worried!

NHS won't be able to hep you. If it is due to a piercing you need to remove it immediately to prevent the problem getting worse. However, there are lots of reasons for receding gums, one of which is gum disease. I'd recommend an urgent consultation with a reputable dentist.

If it is a localised problem due to the piercing, there are procedeures whereby the gum can be grafted to correct the problem.

Hi again thanks for the reply - I took the stud out when it started causing probs - about 4 years ago now - but its still a real mess - can you recommend anywhere in the north west for the graft or where to go next as I have already been to two private dentists. Can you give me any more info as to how painful/ how long for this kinda treatment.

I'm not sure of who would be best to help you in the north west. The discomfort experienced is related to the type of procedure undertaken, so it would be best discussed with the treating dentist. Many of these procedures are not too painful but I must again emphasise it depends on what needs to be done

You would be best looking up a periodontist (gum specialist) in your are if you want a gum graft, this type of treatment will not be available on the NHS
