I have just had my front four crowns replaced with all porcelain crowns as I wanted the most natural looking replacements for my old crowns. My front left tooth was root filled some years back and has become very dark, the problem is that the darkness is now showing through my crown, it looks as though it is a shadow or stain, I opted for the all porcelain in good faith, now I realise that the metal crown covered with porcelain would not have allowed the darkness of the old tooth to show through. This wasn't mentioned as a possibility when I had my consultation and I am now wondering if there is anything my dentist can do to rectify the problem, I just feel as though I have replaced one worry about the appearance of my teeth with another!! I also feel that if I had known this was going to happen then i would have opted for the porcelain over metal crown. What should I do? the crowns were permanently fitted this morning and the dark shadow is really noticeable!

If you have concerns, I would speak to your dentist who carried out the treatment.

I agree address your concerns with your dentist and ask about the possibility of replacing the crown with a metal / porcelain crown

unfortunately remaking the crown is the only option. it is often possible to lighten the tooth before remaking the crown with internal bleaching techniques and then cement with an opaque cement. also certain ceramic crowns are better at blocking this colour out

I would encourage you to discuss this with your dentist. Ideally you
would get to see the final result before the crowns are cemented.

Whilst it can be difficult to mask out a very dark foundation with an
all porcelain crown it is not impossible. I would say the options are
1/replace single dark unit with a new all porcelain crown that has a
more opaque core
2/replace this single unit with porcelain fused to metal crown

If these options did not work there is always the option to replace all
the crowns
