Endekay - fluoride supplements

The active ingredient in this medication is sodium fluoride, a mineral used to supplement fluoride in the body. Fluoride prevents tooth decay by strengthening the tooth enamel, thereby increasing the resistance of the tooth to acid attacks in the mouth. It is also connected to the strength of the bones.

Generally, fluoride is found in drinking water supplies, although the amount may vary from region to region. When fluoride levels are very low, it necessitates the use of supplements, especially in the case of children who need adequate amount of fluoride. The fluoride supplements may be in the form of tablets, tooth pastes and mouth rinses.

Benefits
Fluoride supplements can prevent dental caries caused by low amounts of fluoride in drinking water.

Precautions
The recommended dose is always stated either in the packaging or in a leaflet provided with the medication. This recommended dose must not be exceeded. Use only small amount of fluoride containing toothpaste. Generally an amount the size of a pea should suffice.

In areas with the fluoride content in the water is more than 0.7 parts per million, fluoride supplements are not necessary, and should not be used. In areas where the fluoride content in the water is more than 0.3 parts per million, fluoride supplements should not be used in children under the age of 2.

  • Always consult your dentist about the right dose of fluoride, before giving fluoride supplements to your children.
  • In case of tablet form supplements, these should be chewed or sucked, not swallowed, preferably before bed time. Drops can be either mixed with juice or water, or given with a spoon.
  • Do not use if you are allergic any of the ingredients in this medication. Although there are no harmful effects if used during pregnancy, consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant.
  • Although minute quantities of this medication have been found to pass to the infant through breast mink, these quantities are usually too small to cause any harm.
