Getting Around by Road
The roads in Turkey are currently under improvement and upgradation, and the conditions therefore can be poor. You can get around using the road by availing
- Bus and trolleybus services – Extensive services operating in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir
- Coach services – run by private companies with services that are faster then the trains and having low fares. The best coach operators are Varan and Ulusoy, with their coaches departing from the bus stations or otogar (the international Istnabul bus station) in large towns, and from the town centre in small towns.
- Metro services - available in Ankara and Istanbul
- Car hire – You can avail of self driven or chauffeur driven car hire services by booking through their representative offices in the major cities and towns. Documentation required are national license or an International Driving Permit (for visitors from outside the EU), Turkish third Party insurance, and Green Card International Insurance, endorsed for Turkish territory in both Europe and Asia.
- Metered Taxis – Available in all the main towns in Turkey. A unique type of taxi service seen in Turkey is the dolmus, a collective taxi or minibus along specific routes where each passenger pays according to the distance travelled to specific stops. The dolmus has services within large cities to suburbs, airports and often to neighbouring towns and are much cheaper than conventional taxis.
