yellow discoloration of my daughters teeth due to antibiotics or fluoride, what can be done?
Q. i have a 14 yr old daughter who has yellow discolouration on her teeth, due to either antibiotics or too much fluoride. She feels very conscious about them. What can be done, and at what age?
A. Hi many thanks for your enquiry, the first thing that could be done would be a course of tooth whitening to see if we could try to mask the yellow discolouration by whitening the tissue. This could be done straight away. If this did not help i would then move onto direct veneers (cosmetic bonding) of the teeth using white filling material to cover over the discolouration. Once the teeth had then matured at the age of around 16 i would then replace the direct veneers which are usually made from white composite filling material with a porcelain veneer to help make the teeth look more natural. A word of warning would be if the veneers were done at the age of 16, then they would need to be redone at least 3 more times in the lifetime of your daughter. Hope this is helpful.

Hi,
I am looking for some advice regarding my daughters teeth. She had white patches on her 2 front teeth due to either antibiotics or repeated ear infections themselves as a small child. My husband has porcelain crowns and goes to a specialist dentist in Liverpool, during treatment my husband was telling his dentist about the white patches on my daughters teeth. The dentist asked my husband to bring my daughter along to the surgery and he would try a tooth whitening system on one of her teeth and if it worked he would apply to the NHS for funding to give her a full tooth whitening course. When the dentist examined her he said that this would not work as the white marking penetrated right through the tooth. He advised my husband that he would rough the surface of the teeth and put on a thin film paste that would cover the white patch (sounds like what you advised someone else on this site, copy attached), he advised that this would improve the appearance of my daughters teeth.
I was not happy with the work straight away as you could see a ridge right across her two front teeth and they were uneven and had indents in them as if he had taken off the enamel on her teeth. After a few days her teeth started to discolour. I took her back and told him to take off this film he had put on her teeth, he then told me that this was infact permanent and that it was a filling. He carried out further treatment to improve the discolouration on 2 occassions.
We are now nearly 3 months down the line and my 12 year old daughter is left with terribly discoloured teeth, they are orange. She is devestated and getting skitted in school. The dentist has told us that there is nothing more he can do until she is 16 and old enough for veneers. He was supposed to improve her teeth but has made them 10 times worse. My daughter now has to have veneers at 16 and obviously have the cost of replacing them another 3 times in her life time as you advised the lady below and also the up keep of them for the rest of her life.
Do you have an email address that I could email you before and after pictures of her teeth for your opinion and advice. My daughter is in 1st year of high school and is way above average ability, she has always loved school but now she doesn’t want to go because people skit her and stare at her teeth when she is talking to them. She says she puts her head down when she speaks or nods and shakes her head, she keeps asking me when her teeth are going to be fixed, what do I say? We are absolutely devestated and wish we had left well alone. Please help.

Hello Claire I can see your problem here it may be worth joining the forums at http://www.cosmeticdentistryguide.co.uk/forum and asking your questions there you can even post before and after pics on the forums for dentists to see. If you have any trouble uploading the pics please let us know.
If you would like to put your story in the dental Journey section of the forum it would need to be rewritten as a first hand account coming from your daughter - even if its writen by you - we can publish the pics and get some responses from dentists on the board.

Can flouride really cause discoloration of the teeth? My dentist told me this was a myth.
