With type II diabetes are there any issues with dental implants?

Q.
I have diabetes type 2. I am on Metformin medication. Can I consider havng dental implants? My age is 69 yrs. with no heart or high blood pressure problems. I had my four front teeth broken off during sinus surgery years ago was fitted with dentures for my front teeth. My dentist said I could have had dental implants put in but never mentioned it at the time.

Dear Enquirer,
Well controlled type 2 diabetes is not a contraindication to implant placement. The risk of failure is somewhat higher, but not as high as a lack of patient compliance to instructions.
My experience is Controlled Diabetic Patients loose implants at about the 6 to 8 percent rate. In other words, over 9 out of 10 implants will be successful. You should defintely explore this option further and if you are in the London area, I would be more than happy to take a look and guide you in the right direction. My practice number is 020 8567 4344.

I am a 61yr old male with type 2 diabetes and I have a couple of very looseteeth which my dentist wants to remove. One recently lost the top of it.Ihave no pain therefore am reluctant to part with them. Question- would I bewasting my money by having implants as the loose teeth have been caused bymy diabetes?

I’m 28 years old.I’m not a smoker.I’m not having diabetes.I have removed single tooth on upper jaw when I was 11 years old.The Dentist said there is not enough bone in my jaw.I have been asked to do dental implant with bone graft on upper jaw for replacing single tooth.Could you please tell me what is the success rate of dental implant for my scenario ? Can I wear denture or temparory tooth 10 days after the dental implant surgery with bone graft ?

Pablo Says :

Each surgeon has there own suceess rates. In my hands we get success rates of @ 99%. I am not a fan of wearing a denture over a bone graft / implant but yes some people do follow this protocol.

Hi Diabetes often affects the gum health and I suggest their health is assessed and treated before any advanced cosmetic treatment. You maybe able to get some treatment on the NHS – I would try your PCT or nearest dental hospital. Good luck

I’ve also woke up with an ulcer on the roof of my mouth and my gums bleed very time I brush. What’s causing this cos I brush every day.My late dad used to be bothered like this and he had diabetes could something like this be my problem??

Garrett Says :

There is a chance that your problems relate to diabetes as you are at higher risk of the disease when it is in the family. I would ask you dentist to recheck your gums and highlight your concerns and I would ask your GP to do a diabetes check. Better to be safe than sorry.
